The Serenity Prayer – (God) Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
Today is Christmas Eve and many of us will be striving for the gift of serenity. Christmas can a lovely time of years for many families and those people with an element of faith (in the Christian Community).
Many other folk however will be finding it a terrible, stressful and challenging time of year – a fight against commercialism, a battle with the kids not to spend so much cash that it will take for ever to pay off the debts, or a time of sadness as we remember family members not with us. Some of us will be fighting not to pick up the first drink – thinking “Poor Me, Poor me, Pour me another drink ….”
Staff at Addictions UK will be working throughout the holidays with our clients – we will be reminding both them and ourselves that we must live a day at a time – sometimes an hour at a time. We will leave the drinking and drugging to others and today we will not pick up our first drink or fix. It is the first drink or fix that will do the damage.
We will remember the Serenity Prayer (even if we remove the word “God from the prayer) … Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; and the Wisdom to know the difference. Remembering these words will be important for me and for many of us. We will find Serenity.
