Increased Alcohol Consumption is the “Direct Cause” of a doubling of death rates in Ireland.
Professor Murray, Chairman of the Alcohol Policy Group at the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland said that people dying in Ireland as a result of cirrhosis of the liver doubled from 3.6 per 100,000 people to 7.2 in 2010. Alex White, Irish Minister of State for health with responsibility for Substance Misuse Strategy said that the strategy would be brought to Cabinet “within weeks”.
The Irish Times reported one person at the Conference saying: A person hospitalised for liver damage can have a prognosis to live a little more than a year to 18 months more … “They are getting younger and the gender imbalance between men and women is disappearing”.
Simon Stephens, Head of Casework at Addictions UK – an International agency that works in both Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland – said that there had been an increase in the number of cases of alcohol addiction and drug addiction in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
